Upper Chehalis Basin

Vol 3 delves into the current controversy over possibly building yet a third dam in the Upper Chehalis Basin near Pe Ell. Proponents argue the dam is needed to control flooding that causes damage to property nearly every year and occasionally takes I-5 out of service. Others oppose on the grounds a new dam will negatively impact the environment and adversely impact salmon and steelhead stocks that spawn in the upper reaches of the Chehalis River. The video looks for a geographical connection to the differing opinions. Watch and decide for yourself whether those living in the Upper Basin that are facing the flooding problems with very limited fishing seasons are more likely to support a dam while and those living downstream catching fish during the seasons set by WDFW for the lower Basin place a greater value on the future of the runs are likely to oppose the idea. Finally, the video speculates on how WDFW's historic failure to provide the mitigation promised for the first two dams could eventually become a deciding factor in decision on whether or not to build a new dam.
